What is mobile payment?

Mobile payment is a “cashless” payment method that uses a mobile phone to pay for services and goods. There are four primary models for mobile payment; SMS-based transactions, direct mobile billing, mobile web payments, and payment via near-field communications (NFC).
The NFC payment model is rapidly gathering momentum. It is arguably the most radical because it replaces your credit or debit card with an application embedded in your mobile phone. This creates a great opportunity to develop new and convenient services, but it also creates some real challenges as the worlds of payment and mobile telecommunications converge.
The payment and mobile telecoms sectors are regulated in different ways and have dissimilar business models which impact on service reliability, system security and customer loyalty. However, to gain user acceptance, mobile payments must be deemed 100% reliable, 100% secure and easy to use.
